why is jerusalem important to christianity ?
The city of Jerusalem is of foremost importance to the Christian world. This importance is based on two issues. The first: the Passion of Jesus took place in this city. The second: the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is in Jerusalem. Also numerous sites sacred to Christianity are to be found here.
The Passion of Jesus
The last week in the life of Jesus starts with his entrance to the city following his descent from the Mount of Olives. Fronds of palms are spread before his feet. His entrance to the city is celebrated annually as Palm Sunday on the first Sunday of the Easter Holiday.
The Holy Week
continues with the celebration of the Feast on the Eve of Passover at the site of the Last Supper on Mount Zion.
His last night Jesus has spent in a cave next to Gethsemane. At the break of dawn Judas Iscariot arrived with Roman soldiers and turned him in.
Jesus gets thrown into capture and on the following day he is charged by the Prefect of Judea. After the sentencing the Crown of Thorns is placed on his head. He is forced to carry the cross along his passage on the Via Dolorosa.
The Holy Sepulcher
According to the Christian tradition the crucifixion of Jesus took place in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, on the Golgotha rock. Hence, the tremendous importance of the Holy Sepulcher Church, as the site of the crucifixion.
The act of the crucifying is reenacted every Friday in a procession along the Via Dolorosa. The most significant event takes place during the Easter holiday and is called the Good Friday.
